Are you Silky, Crunchy or Scrunchy?

What kind of mom are you? (Besides a good one of course)

Check out these definitions of what being Silky, Crunchy or Scrunchy moms are:

Silky Mami: Modern mother who prefers medicated hospital birth, bottle feeding/part time breastfeeding, disposable diapers, crib sleeping, etc.  One who follows the advice of established medical authority; often tend to be working moms who rely on modern products for convenience and time management.

Example: She buys her baby food, uses Pampers and vaccinates on schedule…She’s a silky mama!

Crunchy Mami: Mother who supports homebirth, breastfeeding, baby wearing, cloth diapering, co-sleeping, gentle discipline, etc.  One who questions established medical authority; tends to be vegetarian and/or prepare all-organic foods.

Example: That crunchy mama is breastfeeding in public again!

Scrunchy Mami: A mom that is a mixture of both a silky and crunchy mom.  One who may formula feed, and vaccinate as well as hospital birth but may use cloth diapers and make their own baby food.

Example: I formula feed my baby and choose to vaccinate but I support home birth and make my own baby food so I’m a scrunchy mom!

I’ve determined that I’m a scrunchy mom that leans more towards crunchy. I definitely don’t do cloth diapering, and while I hesitate the validity of immunizations on a daily basis, I succumbed and followed the pediatrician’s advice to vaccinate meatball on schedule. What’s really funny is that Crunchy moms are defined as vegetarian or vegan and I’ve been considering moving over to a vegan lifestyle after I am done breastfeeding meatball (which could not be for another 2 years but extended breastfeeding is another post). I’m such a freaking hippie. What am I doing in this era?

Anyhoot, how do you classify yourselves?

Have a great day mamis  🙂

  1. I’m a scrunchy mom! I’m a nurse so I’m a believer in modern medicine, but I nursed, baby wore, co-slept (sometimes), don’t believe in harsh punishment, yeah, so maybe a bit more crunchy then silky. Although, I do LOVE meat so won’t go veggie anytime soon. Thanks for sharing this 🙂

  2. I’m mostly crunchy with a scrunchy twist. I wanted a natural childbirth, but after holding out 12 hours needed the Epi. Later events unfolded where we needed major medical intervention, so I had to, and still do, put a decent amount of faith in modern medicine. I wanted to breastfeed so badly that after it didn’t work out I became an exclusive pumper. I DO cloth diaper (I tried both ‘sposies and cloth and prefer cloth…it’s so easy and economical if you have a washer and dryer…and the diapers are so darn cute!) I also plan on making my own baby food when the time comes. I wanted to baby wear, buying both a moby and becco baby carrier for the purpose, but can’t ever seem to find the opportunity to. I also wanted to vaccinate, but found a pediatrician that prefers a delayed vaccination schedule for some of the vaccines. We sometimes co-sleep (he sleeps better that way and I do love to snuggle him) and sometimes crib sleep (we feel safer with him in the crib). No temptation for the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle though…To sum up, I lean towards doing things in a more natural way but sometimes need some help, so…I have a scrunchy twist!

    • I also tried to hold out and go all natural for birth, but after 24 hours of labor I gave out and asked for the epidural. It was mostly because I was exhausted and just wanted to sleep before pushing. Next time though I would love to do a natural birth (at a hospital, that’s some silky right there).

As for cloth diapers, I agree, if you have a washer & dryer then it’s more economical. I don’t so going to the laundromat with a bag of soiled diapers daily is not an option.

Vaccinations, I figure I have mine and I came out ok, as did everyone else I know. I wasn’t a fan of letting meatball get the flu shot but I was totally pressured by my overbearing mom to go for it. Sigh….relatives.
Also, for eating, I don’t actually make any food for meatball. I do baby led weaning (where babies feed themselves and eat what you eat). It’s been great so far but I also waited until 7 months to introduce solids. I plan on breastfeeding meatball forever (LMAO).

And I’m all for co-sleeping. I fully enjoy the family bed and as a matter of fact, meatball is snuggled up next to me now. I absolutely LOVE sleeping with her and waking up next to her. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE! I put her in the crib from time to time, mostly for her daytime naps or when I’m busy cleaning or showering.

Baby wearing….yes! But not as often as you think. I have a moby wrap I used once and an ergobaby carrier I use often. Most times I just carry her in my arms, because getting this squiggly little worm into her carrier is a bit of a nightmare at times.

So there you have it, some of my scrunchy ways.

Want to write a little entry about being an exclusive pumper?

  3. You can be vegan and breastfeed! My DS more than tripled his birthweight in a year with my veggie-powered breast milk, and his supplemental vegan food after 6 months.

But I do use disposable diapers. I know, such a contradiction. Ha! And we vaccinate. Guess I’m a Crunchy person but a Scrunchy Momma.

  4. I’m scrunchy! My children were born in a hospital, but all natural. I love my jogging stroller AND my carrier! I prefer natural remedies, but will give medicine if necessary. I wasn’t able to breastfeedmy son long, but am 3 months strong with my daughter! I also plan to try BLW! I was the only one on board with cloth diapers though, so disposables it is… lol! I also think breastmilk And coconut oil solve almost every problem. Ha!

  5. I use to be pretty silky but now I’m as crunchy as can be. I had my 1st kiddo in a hospital, got the epi, used disposables, and bought baby food. Yep, I was a modern working mother. I did breastfeed her and pumped at work though. I was all about cosleeping too. Fast forward 6 years and I now homeschool, homestead, compost, etc. My next kiddo will be born all natural in a birthing center. No vaccinations this time around either and we are all for cloth diapers. People change but we should still be good to one another. Be some what crunchy if you can (great for the environment) if not settle for being the best momma you can be!

  6. I am new to the blogging world and just shared this post on my blog…please tell me if that is not okay. I am not sure of the proper etiquette to follow

  7. Hmmm…I was scrunch but Prit near crunchy now.
    More crunchy with each kid
    No more vaxing
    As little meds as possible
But had one baby 3’months early so I am thankful for modern medicine in emergency situation s.
    Ditched the crib .
    Co sleep… read about it.
Breastfeeding 2 1/2 years each kid.
No fluoride…against teeth xrays just to have o. Record.
    Anti bleached sugar and flour.
    No GMOs.
    Love my chiropractors.
    Colic is a myth.
    I love oils…God don’t make junk!
    No high fructose syrup.
    I homeschool.
I eat tons of meat…mostly wild(Ive shot bambi) and butchered chickens.
Organic rocks but wild is better!
No bleach in this mommas house! Hate sulfates.
Healing my babys guts with probiotics and fitchrd gluten before even glancing at drugs.
Got cloth pull ups. But disposable diapers 😦
Gotta get my hubby on board.
Just got a moon cup. Natural makeup.
    I’m a conservative. I vote.
    Think I’m scrunchy or crunchy.

  8. Definitely a scrunchy. I’m definitely into modern conveniences but with my job I have the benefit of breastfeeding almost exclusively!

  9. How about we are all just moms? The labels are getting ridiculous and further separating moms. We all deserve support from one another, not competition.

    • Yes!!!!!!

This. This is my favourite comment. I read through the post and all I could think was – what is so wrong with just being mum. Why do I need a label for the things I choose to do? Why do mums need to be segregated into new definitions???

    • It’s only competition if you let it. I like identifying with a group, but as I recently commented you can label or not label yourself, as long as you’re a happy mom, you’re good in my book.

  10. I thought I was pretty traditional once upon a time, but when it came right down to it, I made some pretty crispy decisions. No epidural or pitocin, no meds of any kind ever, no vax, baby led weaning, co sleeping, no spanking, no sleep training, and boobie milk forever and a day. My back is a wreck, so I couldn’t baby wear and I use disposables, so I guess that’s about as silky as I get.
